Twitter Cards: How to Make Your Links Stand Out
A text-only tweet is easily ignored. But a tweet with a massive, clickable image? That gets clicks. π¦
When users share your website's links on X (formerly Twitter), you want to control exactly what appears in their followers' timelines. This is achieved using Twitter Cards.
What are Twitter Cards?
Similar to Open Graph tags used by Facebook, Twitter Cards are specific HTML <meta> tags placed in the <head> of your website. They instruct Twitter's crawlers on how to render the link preview.
Tweets with visual cards see significantly higher engagement rates, retweets, and link clicks compared to standard text links. If you aren't using Twitter Cards, you are leaving traffic on the table.
Types of Twitter Cards
There are a few different types of cards, but the vast majority of websites only need to worry about two:
π Summary Card (summary): Features a title, description, and a small thumbnail image. Good for text-heavy content or sites without large cover images.
πΌοΈ Summary Card with Large Image (summary_large_image): Features a title, description, and a prominent, full-width image. This is the recommended format for maximum engagement.
Here is how you implement the code for a Large Image card:
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Awesome Blog Post">
<meta name="twitter:description" content="You won't believe how easy it is to add Twitter cards.">
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://yoursite.com/large-cover.jpg">
<meta name="twitter:site" content="@YourTwitterHandle">
Best Practices for Images
To ensure your images look sharp across all devices and Twitter clients:
- Size: Minimum 300x157 pixels. Maximum 4096x4096 pixels.
- Aspect Ratio: Keep it at 2:1 (e.g., 1200x600 pixels) to prevent cropping.
- Format: JPG, PNG, WEBP, or GIF (though only the first frame of a GIF will be shown).
- File Size: Less than 5MB.
