The Ultimate Guide to UTM Parameters
Are you flying blind with your marketing campaigns? π
If you're sharing links on social media, in newsletters, or running paid ads without UTM parameters, you have no idea which efforts are actually driving traffic and conversions. You need a systematic way to track your success.
What are UTM Parameters?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are short text codes that you add to the end of a regular URL. When someone clicks a link with these codes, Google Analytics (and most other analytics platforms) tracks the tags and attributes the traffic to the specific campaign you set up.
Using UTM parameters is the difference between knowing "some people came from Twitter" and knowing "150 people came from the Tuesday promo tweet, resulting in 5 signups."
The 5 Standard UTM Tags
There are five standard UTM parameters you can use to track your links. The first three are almost always required for good tracking:
π― utm_source: The specific platform sending traffic (e.g., google, newsletter, facebook).
π’ utm_medium: The type of channel or marketing medium (e.g., cpc, email, social).
π utm_campaign: The name of the specific promotion or campaign (e.g., summer_sale_2026, product_launch).
π utm_term: (Optional) Used for paid search to track the specific keyword targeted.
πΌοΈ utm_content: (Optional) Used to differentiate similar links in the same ad/email (e.g., header_button vs footer_link).

Best Practices for Naming Conventions
The biggest mistake marketers make is inconsistent naming. Email, email, and E-mail will show up as three separate mediums in Google Analytics! π±
Always use lowercase letters. Use underscores or hyphens instead of spaces (e.g., spring_sale instead of spring sale). Finally, keep a spreadsheet or document outlining your company's standard naming conventions so everyone is on the same page.
