Frequently Asked Questions
What are meta tags and why do they matter for SEO?
Meta tags are HTML elements placed in the <head> section of a webpage that provide metadata about the page to search engines and browsers. They don't appear on the page itself, but they tell search engines what the page is about, how to index it, and how to display it in search results.
The most important meta tags for SEO are the title tag and meta description. The title tag is a top-ranking factor for Google, and the meta description influences click-through rates (CTR) from search engine results pages (SERPs).
What is the ideal length for a meta title and description?
For meta titles, aim for 50–60 characters. Google typically displays the first 50–60 characters of a title tag, so staying within this range ensures your full title shows in search results without being truncated.
For meta descriptions, aim for 150–160 characters. Google may show up to about 155–160 characters on desktop. Mobile results may show fewer characters. Write a compelling description within this limit for best results.
Do meta keywords still affect SEO rankings?
No. Google has officially confirmed that it does not use the meta keywords tag as a ranking signal. This has been the case since at least 2009. Bing also largely ignores this tag.
However, some smaller search engines and internal site search tools may still reference meta keywords. Including them won't hurt your SEO — they're simply ignored by the major search engines. Our generator includes the field as an option for completeness.
How do I add meta tags to my website?
Copy the generated code from this tool and paste it into the <head> section of your HTML file, before the closing </head> tag. If you use a CMS like WordPress, most SEO plugins (such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math) let you set meta tags through their interface without editing code directly.
For static HTML sites, simply open your HTML file in a code editor, find the <head> section, and paste the tags there. Make sure each page has unique meta tags tailored to its content.
