Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sitemap.xml and why do I need one?
A sitemap.xml is an XML file that lists all the important URLs on your website. It helps search engines like Google, Bing, and others discover and crawl your pages more efficiently. While search engines can find pages through links, a sitemap ensures no important page is missed β especially useful for new sites, large sites, or pages with few internal links.
What do changefreq and priority mean in a sitemap?
changefreq (change frequency) is a hint to search engines about how often a page's content changes β values range from "always" to "never." priority is a value from 0.0 to 1.0 that indicates the relative importance of a page within your site (default is 0.5). Note that Google has stated it largely ignores both of these values, but other search engines may still use them as crawling hints.
How many URLs can I include in a sitemap?
A single sitemap.xml file can contain a maximum of 50,000 URLs and must not exceed 50MB (uncompressed). If your site has more URLs, you'll need to split them across multiple sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index file. This tool is ideal for smaller sites or for creating individual sitemap files that you can later combine.
Where do I put my sitemap.xml file?
Place your sitemap.xml at the root of your website (e.g., https://example.com/sitemap.xml). You should also reference it in your robots.txt file with a Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml directive, and submit it through Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for faster discovery.
